Retaining walls are typically constructed using one of three techniques, CMU block retaining walls, cast in place concrete retaining walls, and Shotcrete retaining walls.
- Cast In Place Retaining Walls - The most commonly used method is cast in place walls. This type of wall is more common as CMU units can limit the placement of steel reinforcing rebar within the wall and cast in place walls are much more versatile. Wood form work is constructed, steel rebar is placed as required, and concrete is pumped and into the form work to form a monolithic concrete wall.
- CMU Block Retaining Walls - Generally speaking CMU block walls are the simplest walls to construct primarily because no form work is required during construction. Precast concrete blocks, also known as concrete masonry units, are set over a supporting concrete footing. Steel reinforcing rebar is placed at specified vertical and horizontal locations during the block placement. When form work and rebar is complete the CMU cells are pumped with concrete.
- Shotcrete Retaining Walls - The third method is Shotcrete retaining walls. Shotcrete walls are constructed in a similar way as cast in place walls but instead of constructing the second side of the form work a special type of concrete, Shotcrete, is then blown onto the form and hand finished.
